I'm still on my vacation to the UK and Ireland, and I have seen so many amazing things. I sat first row center court at Wimbledon and ate strawberries and cream. Yum. I hiked to the tops of the Cliffs of Moher on the west coast of Ireland and saw breathtaking scenery. I ate haggis. I looked beneath William Wallace's kilt. ;) Okay, it was the kilt on his statue, but hey, I still looked.
I also made it to my ancestral homeland in Renfrewshire, Scotland. It's hard to say what the favorite part of the trip has been so far, but I think it was the drive through the old McGreggor (Rob Roy) land at the base of the Scottish Highlands. No wonder they fought so hard to hold onto that land! Amazing.
I still have a few trips on my agenda, including some of the small Irish coastal towns and a trip to a seaside spa. I'll bore you with all the details when I get back. :) In the mean time, here's a double rainbow that appeared in the Irish countryside on the trip to County Clare. Leave it to the Irish to have TWO rainbows at once.

Bizarre Weddings

I've always been a big sucker for weddings.
Over the years I've attended weddings that range from the very elegant to the extremely casual, and I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them.
It never crossed my mind there would ever be a wedding I wouldn't want to attend.
And then this morning as I was getting ready for work and listening to the early morning radio program I always listen to, people were asked to call in with the most bizarre wedding they had ever attended.
One listener called in about a beach wedding she'd attended, complaining the sea gulls kept flying into the tent set up on the beach for the reception, and saying there was sea gull poop all over everything, including the wedding cake that no one dared to eat.
There was mention of a biker wedding, where the bride and groom road their Harleys up to the minister and actually said their vows while sitting on their bikes - both decked out in traditonal biker leather.
There was a bride who held her beloved cat during the ceremony instead of a bridal bouquet, and the cat actually hissed at the groom when he put the ring on her finger.
Two scuba divers got married under water in Hawaii - and the guest watched the ceremony through the windows of one of those glass bottom boats that takes you out to the barrier reef to dive.
And all the while I kept thinking - so what? Maybe these weren't your traditional type weddings, but I would have been a joyful guest all the same.
But then a listener called in with what would have been the tie-breaker, even for me - the biggest wedding sucker ever.
This listerner's cousin got married at a Golden Corral - which is a buffet-style restaurant for those of you who don't have this heart-attack-waiting-to-happen restaurant chain in your area. The bride and groom got married right in front of the salad bar, the listener said, and if you were one of the lucky guests attending, you got a whopping $2.00 discount on the buffet fee for the pay-to-eat wedding reception that was held after the ceremony.
Okay, I'm sorry, but all I could think was ewwww.
With the sucky economy today I can certainly understand asking the guests to pay for their own meal, which I would have gladly been ready to do. But please - at least pick a nice restaurant already! This is one wedding I know I would not have attended, so I guess I'm not as big of a wedding sucker as I thought, huh?
What about you?
What's the most bizarre wedding you've had the pleasure (or not) of attending?

First Concert of the Summer

One of the things I love to do in the summer is go to concerts. While I enjoy classical concerts at Cleveland's beautiful Severance Hall in the winter, there's nothing like being outdoors on a summer night, listening to music.
This weekend, I attended a Judy Collins concert at Cain Park. Built in 1938 in the middle of a residential neighborhood, Cain Park is a beautiful venue for concerts, plays, and shows. Two outdoor theaters and an art gallery provide a cultural oasis for Cleveland Heights, an inner-ring suburb of Cleveland.
If you listened to popular music in the 1960s or 1970s, you'll remember Judy Collins. Her career began during the early 60s during the huge folk-music revival. Her first big hit was a cover of Joni Mitchell's Clouds and she began the show with that song, following with the equally poignant Someday Soon. After a few touching words about her friend Harry Chapin, she did a beautiful version of his Cats in the Cradle, asking the audience to sing along.
For the first half of the show, Collins sang and sometimes played guitar, accompanied by a pianist. She mixed oldies with a few new numbers, including a melancholy song about a young girl losing her brother in the Iraq war, and another about the painter Gaughin. In the second half of the concert, following an intermission, Collins played the piano herself and sang a medley that contained Colors of the Day. She ended the concert with another piece she's known for, Send in the Clowns. After a standing ovation from the audience, she ended the evening with a tear-inducing Amazing Grace.
Although Judy Collins is now 70 years old, she still has the lovely, soaring voice she was always known for. I'm thrilled I was able to attend this concert.
